Led by a star, the magi made their way to Jerusalem, asking: where is the newborn king of the Jews? Finding him with Mary his mother, they knelt and worshipped him. Melchior offered gold; Caspar, frankincense; and Balthazar, myrrh.
Until the fifteenth century the three races of the magi were not clearly distinguished. From the sixteenth century onward, Balthazar came to be depicted as a black man.
