Crowned, hands joined and eyes lowered, the figure follows the Immaculist model fixed in Portugal and Brazil from 1646, when King John IV proclaimed Our Lady of the Conception patroness of the kingdom and laid his own crown at the image's feet — the reason why, from then on, the kings of Portugal were never crowned again.
The iconography comes from the woman clothed with the sun of the Apocalypse: the blue mantle, the pale tunic, the moon underfoot. In Brazil the type multiplied through household oratories and plantation chapels, and is one of the few that crosses every scale, from a span high to the figure of a high altar.
